Compact Track Loader vs. Multi Terrain Loader: Choosing the Right Machine for the Job

Compact track loaders (CTLs) and Multi Terrain Loaders (MTLs) look like two very similar pieces of equipment but they have a number of important differences. In this blog, the equipment experts are Papé Machinery Construction & Forestry explain the key differences and how to choose the right machine for the job at hand.

Multi Terrain Loaders

MTLs are lightweight tracked loaders specifically designed for jobs that require low ground pressure and improved floatation. Work on lawns, established yards, or environmentally conscious jobsites where ground disturbance is a concern are the types of applications where an MTL makes sense. MTLs are typically faster than CTLs and offer a smoother ride on uneven surfaces due to their suspended undercarriages.

Compact Track Loaders

The compact track loader undercarriage is rigid-mounted, and the tracks are reinforced with steel which make the machine heavier, but also much more durable. CTLs are capable of working in gravel and other harsh conditions that an MTL wouldn’t be suited to and depending on the model can haul up to 3,700 lbs.

Compact Track Loader vs Multi Terrain Loader

On a tracked machine, you can expect about 50% of your maintenance
costs to be spent on the undercarriage. The thinner, lighter steel on an MTL will require more maintenance than the heavy-duty design of a CTL. MTL rubber tracks also tend to wear out faster than a CTL’s rubber-coated steel tracks. Unless your application specifically requires the lightest tracked loader to minimize disturbance, most customers find that they will save significantly on maintenance costs over the life of the machine by opting for a CTL.
